One outcome from my experiments with carved stamps and colored clay inlay was a group of pattern elements that appear in coasters and other ceramic works using the stamps. A kind of rustic starburst, chrysanthemum or 'splat' shape enlivened the surfaces. Because they were produced by different stamps, there is a variety to them. The design motifs seem too good to leave at that small original scale, so I scanned the final clay surfaces, isolated the motifs, traced them as digital outlines, and populated new surfaces with them. Flowerburst is a pattern that derives directly from my hand; the carved stamps impressed and then filled with color, are organic, vivacious and cheerful. Color in the Flowerburst design is meant to add optical variation, using analogous colors, without adding a lot of contrast. Future colorways might play more with tone or contrast, but the initial set of colors for the design are intended to elevate the mood and induce happiness.
