CARL CROSSGROVE

I was raised in central Connecticut at the University of Connecticut. Fireflies, ice storms, lightning, and poison ivy. Childhood obsessions with pumpkins, butterflies, skeletons, cephalopods, alphabets, botany. Did typeface design as a calling 1990-2020. Spent 20+ years in California for school and work, eventually realizing I wasn’t happy in any large city. Now based in Santa Fe, NM, diving into creative projects I’ve put off all these years. Look around this site to learn more. I’ve been drawing since before I could read, drawing and designing everything…. Also dabbling in every creative medium I could find: paper marbling, batik, woodworking, stained glass, tesselation, calligraphy, printmaking, ceramics, bookbinding, papermaking…. I had my Art Nouveau period, my Art Deco period, and now I guess I’m in a protracted MidMod period. It seems that my core impulse is design. Still making typefaces and letterforms, but also furniture, ceramics, lighting, and whatever else I can get my hands on. The concepts, motifs and forms drift from one medium to another. Lettering to tile, to lighting, ceramics to pattern to textiles…. I’m part of an artist family going back several generations, which also continues into the future. Feel free to inquire via e-mail. Sign up for updates and announcements (they’ll never be obnoxious), and check back for more detail on various projects.
