Essentially an experiment, Beorcana seeks to find out how comfortable a book typeface can be without the seemingly essential convention of serifs. In the 20th and 21st centuries, the Sans-serif letter has triumphed. But it isn't the same, un-differentiated, mechanical grotesque that appeared originally. Just as history has given serif types a wide range of style and finish, so Serifless type has adopted a wide range of structures, finishes and purposes. Beorcana hews closely to renaissance serif types in nearly every other respect: Diagonal stress, moderate contrast, humanistic, renaissance proportions, and clear, classic, handmade organic forms. A calligraphic finish on stroke ends expresses the lingering influence of the broad pen. In a range of optical sizes, Beorcana can perform for text, enabling comfortable extended reading. A display range adds vigor and cohesion to layouts. Micro styles hold up to the punishing environment of fine print. Most of the text on this website is set in Beorcana. You’re reading it now.
